Black and White Photography

http://www.michaelkenna.net/index2.php

Michael Kenna is a photographer that produces black and white photos.  While I was looking at his portfolio, I was intrigued by the emotions that black and white photography can produce.  One interesting thing that I read regarding his artwork was that his black and white photography represents calm, no matter what the weather or situation is.  If it is raining, storming, hot and sunny, or day/night, all of the photos bring about the same calmness or stillness of the setting the photo was taken.  I found this accurate as I looked through the photos from around the world that he has taken.  Whether they were of a city at night or a storm in the middle of nowhere, they all bring a sense of calmness to the viewer.
Looking at these photos, it makes me want to take some black and white photos to try and capture the same response.  It might not make the audience see a photo of color, but it still brings a personal feeling to those that are looking at it.  This may be a desire to go to this place, or simply just an emotional feeling.

Week 1- Travel Photography Tips

William Woodward Travel Photography

William Woodward outlines interesting techniques to use while photographing a travel experience.  He mentions that an image can be so much more powerful if the photographer uses an approach that makes it clear and more appealing to the eye.  There are techniques that one can use such as getting a different camera angle, using different lighting, or simply changing the white balance and other characteristics of the photo.

Techniques that are used by this author include exposure, contrast, shadows, whites/blacks and clarity.  I did not know that there was so much that goes into making an image sharper, letting the viewer experience the same destination as the photographer.

This article is interesting to me as I did not know that there were so many things that can be done to a photo to change it that dramatically.  I really like the images that this author included in the post.  They are all eye-catching and make you stop to look.  This article compares images, such as a before and after photo, so that the viewer can note the difference in the photos with little changes made by the photographer.
